PALO ALTO, Calif. — Former FBI Agent G. G. (Jerry) Campbell, who took part in the FBI ambush of the notorious John Dillinger outside a Chicago theater in 1934, has died at age 84.
Campbell, who retired in 1965 after 31 years with the FBI, died Tuesday after a heart attack.
He was one of two surviving members of the FBI team that killed Dillinger, according to an article last year in a bureau publication. Dillinger, head of a gang that pulled off many daring bank robberies, was set up for the ambush at the Chicago movie theater by Anna Sage, the so-called Lady in Red, who was cooperating with federal agents.
Campbell also helped track down such legendary gangsters as Bonnie Parker, Clyde Barrow, Ma Barker and Charles Arthur (Pretty Boy) Floyd.
