CHARGER REVIEW : REPORT CARD : Not Even Close to Making the Grade
D: QUARTERBACKS
Milli Vanilli has better chance of making a comeback than Chargers when behind. What’s worse? Tolliver’s passes? Or the guys trying to catch his passes?
C+: RUNNING BACKS
They say Rod Bernstine can’t block, and he’s hurt, so they send him in to block. Ronnie Harmon dazzles, but Marion Butts spends day on his keister.
F: RECEIVERS
Wouldn’t be shocked if Nate Lewis didn’t catch a ride home. Nice day: Arthur Cox loses 6 yards on 2 catches and 15 yards for kicking a defender.
C: OFFENSIVE LINE
Tight ends add hand in stopping Derrick Thomas. Ground game goes nowhere, and battered Tolliver looks like someone who’s fought Arnold Schwarzenegger.
C-: DEFENSIVE LINE
Steve DeBerg has felt more pressure from door-to-door magazine salesmen than he faced from these guys. Chiefs get last word in trenches with Barry Word.
F: LINEBACKERS
Chargers stick with a limping Junior Seau and now you know what they think of his backup, Cedric Figaro. Linebackers make Bill Jones a household name in KC.
D: DEFENSIVE BACKS
J.J. Birden could have run all the way to Oklahoma and these guys wouldn’t have caught him. Of course, they were kind to give Birden a head start.
D-: SPECIAL TEAMS
Does Junior Seau have an incentive clause in his contract that rewards him for being penalized on kickoffs? Chiefs dominate Chargers’ special teams.
D: COACHING
Al Saunders stopped by--makes you appreciate just how far the Chargers have come. Where they go from here depends on just how good Dan Henning is.
