World IN BRIEF : INDIA : Student Hijackers May Get Asylum
Two students from Myanmar who hijacked a Thai jetliner to India will not be extradited while officials consider their request for political asylum, news reports and officials said in Calcutta. Prosecutors filed charges against the two men, but an official said they will be given special treatment while in custody. The students commandeered the Thai Airways Airbus 300 on a flight from Bangkok Saturday with a phony bomb made from soap and wires. They said they wanted to draw attention to the military’s refusal to relinquish power in Myanmar, formerly Burma, to an elected civilian government.
