Sergeant, Party-Goer Wounded in Melee
A Los Angeles police sergeant and a gun-wielding party-goer were wounded in a melee at a party Saturday night on East 25th Street, police said.
Sgt. Steve Richards, 34, shot in the left thigh, was in satisfactory condition Sunday at Santa Marta Hospital.
Manuel Najera, 26, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon at the jail ward of County-USC Medical Center, where he was in stable condition, police said.
Newton Division officers were called to investigate shots fired at the party, which police said was attended by up to 50 people.
The officers were in an alley behind the residence when a shot rang out, wounding Richards, Lt. Charles Massey said. Officers returned fire.
