TOKYO — Makoto Sasaki of the Daiei Hawks singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning off Cincinnati’s Rob Dibble to lead the Japanese all-stars past the major leaguers 2-1 today for their third consecutive victory in the eight-game goodwill series.
The major leaguers got 11 hits off six pitchers but stranded 10 runners at Seibu Stadium on the outskirts of Tokyo. They loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Houston’s Glenn Davis grounded out to end the inning.
They loaded the bases again with one out in the ninth, but Cincinnati’s Chris Sabo flied out and Seattle’s Ken Griffey Jr. grounded out to end the game.
Oakland’s Dave Stewart, the Most Valuable Player of the American League playoffs, allowed five hits and struck out five in six innings.
