Short Takes : How-deee, Minnie--That’s 50!
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Some of country music’s top stars gathered on stage at the Grand Ole Opry for a tribute to humorist Minnie Pearl on her 50th anniversary with the show.
Others sent recorded tributes to be shown during Saturday’s show, including one from Dolly Parton, who said: “I love you. I miss you.”
To which Minnie Pearl responded: “I wear a hat so folks can tell us apart.”
Minnie Pearl, 78, wearing her trademark gingham dress and straw hat with its $1.98 price tag dangling, greeted the Opry crowd and the live Nashville Network cable television audience with her standard salutation: “How-deee! I’m just so glad to be here!”
“This is a special night for all of us,” said Roy Acuff, 87, who has performed with Pearl throughout her career.
