Chief Honored for Fight Against Hate Crimes

Glendale Police Chief David Thompson’s efforts to combat hate crimes in the city were recognized Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations.
On behalf of the commission, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich presented Thompson the John Anson Ford Award honoring his department’s work in investigating and arresting those responsible for hate crimes, said Celia Zager, commission spokeswoman.
The number of hate crimes in Glendale dropped during the first half of 1990, while there has been an increase countywide, Zager said.
In 1989, eight hate crimes were reported and arrests were made in five of the cases, said Christopher Loop, the Glendale Police Department’s hate crime investigator.
This year, four incidents were reported and arrests have been made in two cases, Loop said.
Loop said Thompson has instructed the department to give hate crimes the same high priority as homicide cases.
