Johnson Runs for 207 Yards, La Habra Rips Bolsa Grande
GARDEN GROVE — La Habra High School junior tailback Jason Johnson rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns in 29 carries to lead the Highlanders to a 26-7 nonleague victory over outmanned Bolsa Grande Friday night at Bolsa Grande Stadium.
The Highlanders (2-0) scored on their first two possessions, took a 26-7 halftime lead and controlled the football most of the second half against the Matadors (0-2). La Habra’s defense, led by linebacker Pat Gleason, allowed only 37 yards offense in the first half.
Johnson, a 5-8, 165-pounder, scored the game’s first two touchdowns on runs of 2 and 23 yards. Quarterback Greg Mitchell accounted for the other Clan scores with a two-yard run and a 75-yard pass to Mike Miller with only 26 seconds left before intermission. Mike Mooney converted on two of his four attempts.
Bolsa Grande, with only 24 players suited up, scored its touchdown when Jason Gonzales recovered a fumbled Highlander punt return in the end zone with 11:14 left in the second quarter. John Baughman kicked the extra point.
