OXNARD : Independence Fiesta to Feature Celebrities

A former Dallas Cowboys football player, Mexican entertainers and local singers and dancers will join today in Ventura County’s Las Fiestas Patrias, an annual celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain.
Singer Liz Navar will serve as grand marshal of the parade at 11 a.m. today on C Street in downtown Oxnard. Efren Herrera, former place-kicker for the Dallas Cowboys, will appear.
Opening ceremonies start at 7 a.m. in Plaza Park at 5th and C streets. Local performing groups are featured the rest of the morning. A ceremony with Mexican Consulate Zoila A. De Rodriguez will be held at 10:45 a.m. Entertainment groups from Chihuahua, Jalisco and Durango will be featured until 10 p.m.
Sunday’s performances, which will take place on two stages, start at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live on Jones Intercable from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; on KTRO Spanish Radio from 2 to 6 p.m.; and on KOXR Spanish Radio from 6 to 10 p.m.
