Ruby S. Holland; Retired Film Technician

Ruby S. Holland, a retired film technician who lived in Burbank for nearly three decades, has died at her Van Nuys home. She was 78.

Mrs. Holland died Thursday of natural causes, said her son, Don Kidwell of Burbank.

Born Ruby Smith on July 15, 1912, in Summerville, Ga., Mrs. Holland was raised in Atlanta. She moved to California in the mid-1930s and worked as a telephone operator for various companies. She owned a knitting store in Los Angeles for a few years in the late 1940s and early 1950s and was later hired as a film technician by Technicolor Inc. in Los Angeles, where she made prints of movies for theatrical release. She retired in the late 1970s from Deluxe Laboratories in Hollywood.

Mrs. Holland continued to knit most of her life and taught her skills to neighbors and friends during her retirement. She lived in Burbank for nearly 30 years before moving to Van Nuys two years ago.

In addition to her son, she is survived by sisters Andrilla S. Camp of Rome, Ga., Reba S. Howard of Roswell, Ga., and Annie Ruth S. Wallace of Powder Springs, Ga.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Monday, with burial at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood. Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
