Leonard L. Kleinman, executive vice president of the New York Yankees, testified for two hours on the second day of his hearing before Commissioner Fay Vincent, then the proceedings were recessed for at least 10 days.
Vincent is inquiring about Kleinman’s role in the $40,000 payment made by Yankee owner George Steinbrenner to gambler Howard Spira and what Kleinman did to help Spira establish a bank account.
Robert Costello, one of Kleinman’s attorneys, would not characterize his client’s testimony but said the hearing would not resume until Sept. 17 at the earliest. Costello said Kleinman would continue his testimony when the hearing resumes.
Steinbrenner, after an investigation and hearing by the commissioner into his dealings with Spira, was ordered to resign as general partner and to give up his day-to-day control of the Yankees.
