IN BRIEF : New Program Targets Hate Crimes in L. A.

A new anti-hate-crime program called “L.A. Cares,” launched by the International Institute of Los Angeles, will help victims recover from racial, ethnic and religious incidents.
The program will provide grants of up to $500 in cases where such funds can contribute to the victim’s recovery. Board President Roberto Andreos says the grants are small, but does “demonstrate that our community does care and will support a stand against cowardly bullie,” he said.
L.A. Cares is the nation’s second program of its kind. The first, launched in Boston, has become an important asset for individuals and organizations damaged by hate crimes.
The International Institute of Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization, founded in 1914, is dedicated to helping immigrants, refugees, the foreign born and their children achieve economic and social self-sufficiency. Information: (213) 264-6210.
Sign-Ups Continue for Performing Arts Class
Registration continues through Sept. 15 for year-round classes in music, voice, dance and drama at the R.D. Colburn School of Performing Arts, 3131 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles. Information: (213) 743-5252.
The Colburn School is nonprofit and accredited by the National Assn. of Schools of Music. It provides preparation for the student intent on a career while introducing the less experienced student the delights of the performing arts.
