Debate Continues Over NEA Grants
I can’t decide whether to be impressed or depressed by The Times’ dogged support of the “anything goes” approach to NEA funding. Not even The Times can seriously argue that the government should use my money to support everyone who claims to be an “artist”.
What we are witnessing is a simple power struggle between the self-anointed intellectuals who have decided that they constitute the “artistic community,” and the congressmen who feel some responsibility to their constituents. One doesn’t have to think much of politicians to conclude that, as between those alternatives, the politicians are a better bet. At least we know how to get rid of them.
