Mt. Carmel High Athletic Director Frank Andruski announced the hiring of three coaches Monday. The vacancies were created by the departure of several Mt. Carmel coaches for Rancho Bernardo High, which opens this fall.
Andruski named Mike Martino as the water polo coach, Tracey Johnson as the girls basketball coach and Paul Robinson as the boys tennis coach.
Martino was an assistant water polo coach last year at Mt. Carmel and worked with the freshman and junior varsity from 1986 to 1989. A Mt. Carmel graduate, Martino was also the swimming coach at Kearney High.
Johnson, who played at Mesa College in 1981 and 1982, was a varsity assistant to former Mt. Carmel coach Peggy Brose for the past four seasons. Brose left to coach girls basketball at Rancho Bernardo.
During those years, Mt. Carmel won Section titles in 1988 and 1990. During her high school athletic career, Johnson was selected athlete of the year at Poway in 1981.
Robinson will remain as the girls tennis coach and will replace Tony Goffredo as the boys coach.
Andruski said he has yet to name a baseball, softball, gymnastics and swimming coach.
