A Guatemalan woman was killed in Van Nuys when she was struck by a pickup truck at Van Nuys Boulevard and Valerio Street, police said Sunday.
A suspect, Oscar Valdez, 31, of Burbank, fled the Saturday night accident but later turned himself in, said Officer Bill Mulvihill of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The pedestrian, also 31, arrived in Los Angeles three days ago from Guatemala, Mulvihill said. Her identity was withheld until relatives could be notified.
Valdez was charged with vehicular manslaughter. He told police he did not see the woman, or the traffic signal changing, and fled because he panicked.
