Safeway Inc.: The Oakland-based supermarket chain said second-quarter net income surged 306% to $23.6 million, while sales increased 5% to $3.4 billion. The firm said the improvement reflects better buying and more effective merchandising, improved inventory control and increased sales in high-margin specialty departments.
