Armenian Group Sends Relief Supplies to Iran
Medical supplies, food and clothing were flown on Monday to victims of the earthquake in Iran in a cargo plane leased by the Glendale-based United Armenian Fund.
The fund, organized last year to represent and coordinate the activities of seven Armenian groups, agreed to pay the $135,000 cost to lease the plane and to pay for the flight crew and fuel to ship 40 tons of supplies worth $4 million from Washington to Tehran, according to Harut Sassounian, a spokesman for the fund.
The supplies are to be distributed by the Iranian Red Crescent, that country’s equivalent of the Red Cross.
Sassounian said Iran was among the countries around the world that sent help and supplies to Armenia following the devastating earthquake of Dec. 7, 1988.
