A 23-year-old man was killed early Sunday when the car in which he was riding drifted off Interstate 5 and struck an occupied parked vehicle, authorities said.
The accident occurred about 3:55 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway about a mile south of the U.S. Border Patrol’s San Onofre checkpoint, Deputy Coroner Max Murphy said.
The dead man was identified as Paul Edwin Oberholtz of San Diego. Matthew P. Morrison, a 24-year-old Carlsbad resident who was driving the vehicle, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo.
Morrison, who suffered moderate injuries, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving by the California Highway Patrol, an agency spokeswoman said.
The occupant of the parked car, Jose Gonzalez, 49, of Lennox, Calif., suffered minor injuries.
