A South-Central Los Angeles elementary school is among three selected nationwide by the American Federation of Teachers as “professional practice schools” for teacher training methods.
Norwood Elementary School, a 1,400-student, year-round school, will participate in the six-year project--in conjunction with USC and the United Teachers-Los Angeles union--to provide student teachers with the chance to train in a “typical urban, inner-city school,” said Norwood Principal Angelene Kasza.
Norwood will receive $30,000 from the Exxon Education Foundation to plan the program, and more than $80,000 additionally over the next five years to train teachers and test their success at raising student achievement.
