Lotus Wins Copyright Suit: A federal court judge in Boston ruled that the keyboard commands and on-screen images of the company’s top-selling 1-2-3 spreadsheet software program for the personal computer are protected by copyright laws.
Paperback Software International, which plans to appeal the ruling, argued that the copyright applies only to the inner workings of the software, and that the commands represented only instructions for the machine. Similar issues have been raised in a spate of other “look and feel” lawsuits involving the appearance and operations of PC software.
