Low Voter Turnout for Primary
The most disconcerting aspect of the primary election is, by far, the poor voter turnout. Because only about a third of the eligible voters cast their ballots, it is impossible to assess the will of the people.
It is senseless to probe into the many possible reasons for the dearth of voters. There were some very important issues in the guise of propositions as well as those espoused by candidates for office. Why these were ignored by so many people boggles the mind.
It is time to correct this paradox. How? Why not make it a legal obligation to vote, rather than a right or duty? It is a legal obligation of every citizen to serve as a juror. If he or she simply refuses without cause, that person can be fined. If one cannot vote in person, one may use the absentee ballot. There seems to be no excuse for not voting. It is a disservice to the country not to do so.
