Mission Bay High’s Pat Betancourt, a Times’ All-County football selection, was selected by the Houston Astros in late rounds of the free agent draft. Betancourt, a pitcher, was injured during most of the baseball season.
Danny Miller of Poway High and Rob Ippolito of Helix High have been named to the California team and will compete June 21-25 at the Sun Belt Classic in Orlando, Fla.
Miller and Ippolito and Point Loma’s Brett Callan and Escondido’s Tom Afenir represented the South in the three-game North-South baseball series last weekend in San Jose. The 26-member California team was selected from the series.
TRACK
Will Wester, a track and field and cross-country coach at San Pasqual High since 1976, announced his resignation at a track banquet last week. San Pasqual has yet to name his replacement.
Wester, who cited personal reasons in his decision to leave, led the girls’ cross-country team to San Diego Section 2-A titles in 1984 through 1986 and the boys’ in 1988 and 1989, and to the girls’ team track title in 1989. San Pasqual has been undefeated in girls’ cross country in the Avocado League since 1979.
