South County Surfers: ‘Golden Boys’ or ‘Princes of Darkness’?

You recently published a column regarding an incident at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point that gave the writer’s version of an incident involving a group of teen-agers running amok in the snack bar area.
The writer was upset by what she saw as a lack of action by Sheriff’s Deputy Pat Duff. On May 20, you ran two letters from readers reacting to that column. One of the letters made reference to the incident your newspaper “reported.” The other accused Deputy Duff of being cowardly.
As to Deputy Duff being cowardly, I know Duff personally, I know how hard he works, and I know the quality of his work. He has performed heroically at times. This is a very unfair assumption for the writer of that letter to make based on the opinions stated in a column.
