SOFTBALL SOUTHERN SECTION FINALS : Charter Oak Opportunistic in 2-0 Victory
Unseeded Covina Charter Oak took advantage of four Garden Grove errors to help itself to a 2-0 victory in the Southern Section 4-A championship softball game Friday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.
The Chargers strung together three hits in the sixth inning and those, coupled with two Garden Grove errors, resulted in the game’s two runs.
Charter Oak touched Garden Grove pitcher Stephanie Smith, the Orange County strikeout leader with 322, for four hits.
“The difference was our hitting,” Charter Oak first-year Coach Joey Davis said. “I have said every day this week that this is the best-hitting team in CIF. We’ve got two kids hitting .400 (Kathi Evans and Kelly Hunt) and three others hitting over .300.”
