WORLD IN BRIEF : MYANMAR : Opposition Gains, Standoff Continues

The country’s main opposition party added to its massive election mandate, based on unofficial returns from Sunday’s voting, and its followers began making plans for assuming power from the military. But a tense standoff continued between the army and civilians. Only a fraction of the results have been carried in the official media. The media have not reported a statement made to foreign journalists that the army would give up power after a new constitution is adopted.
