Unocal Fined $4,700 for Illegal Dumping
Unocal Corp. was ordered Monday to pay $4,700 in fines and penalties after pleading no contest to charges stemming from the illegal dumping of gasoline-soaked soil excavated at a Pacoima service station.
The sentence was imposed by Los Angeles Municipal Court Commissioner Joseph Spada after attorneys for the company entered no contest pleas to one count each of failing to determine if the waste was hazardous and failing to prepare a hazardous waste manifest before transporting it.
Prosecutors charged that a driver for Paramount-based Hawkeye Equipment Co. dumped a truckload of gasoline-soaked soil at the Bradley Landfill in Sun Valley last June 6.
