Maurice (A&E; Tuesday at 6 p.m., again at 10 p.m.): With compassion, humor and detachment, James Ivory’s superb 1987 film of E.M. Forster’s 1913 novel takes us into the complacent, fixed world of Britain’s privileged classes--a scarcely sympathetic atmosphere in which an utterly conventional young man (James Welby) is confronted with his homosexuality. (2:10) Edited.
