NATION : U.S. Crop Subsidy Freeze Set

WASHINGTON — Bowing to intense political pressure to cut federal spending, the House Agriculture Committee has agreed to freeze federal crop subsidies for the next five years.
The decision, made late Thursday during a contentious closed-door meeting, reversed subcommittee plans to boost agriculture aid by nearly $9 billion in the new 1990 farm bill.
