French Train Cracks Its Record at 317 M.P.H.

PARIS — The French high-speed train has broken its own world speed record, reaching 317 m.p.h. on a run between Courtalain and Tours in central France, officials said Thursday.
The previous record was set Dec. 5, when the Train a Grande Vitesse reached 289.40 m.p.h. on the same run. The train runs at 175 m.p.h. in commercial service.
Until last December, the train world speed record of 243.60 m.p.h. was held by the West German ICE prototype, which has yet to enter commercial service.
