P. M. BRIEFING : The European Makes Its Debut
LONDON — British publishing magnate Robert Maxwell today launched the first edition of a new color weekly, The European, which describes itself as “Europe’s first national newspaper.”
Maxwell told a news conference that the paper is intended to “help to break down and remove borders” throughout the Continent.
A million copies for distribution across Europe contained an interview with West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher and an article by former British Cabinet minister Michael Heseltine, a strong contender to succeed Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, urging Britain to take a more positive attitude to European integration.
The newspaper’s main front-page story was an opinion poll conducted in France, West Germany, Switzerland, Britain, Denmark, Italy and the Soviet Union, which said 60% of those questioned favored a single European currency.
It said a majority of those polled, including 84% in the Soviet Union, regarded the United States as a partner of Europe rather than a competitor.
