WORLD : 26 Die in Mexican Plane Crash

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico — A twin-engine plane crashed today as it tried to land in this southeastern city, killing 26 of the 38 people on board, the manager of the Aviaxa airline said. Most were headed to see Pope John Paul II.
The plane crashed nearly two miles short of a runway at Military Air Base No. 6 on the outskirts of Tuxtla Gutierrez, the official said.
An unconfirmed report said a Roman Catholic bishop was among the fatalities.
