NATION IN BRIEF : TEXAS : 3 Men Sentenced in Prisoner’s Death

Three white former lawmen convicted of murdering a black prisoner were sentenced in Tyler, Tex., to prison terms ranging from 10 to 28 years. Loyal Garner Jr., 34, died in 1987 after being beaten in his cell following a drunken driving arrest. The defendants--former Hemphill Police Chief Thomas Ladner and former Sabine County sheriff’s deputies Billy Ray Horton and James M. Hyden--were convicted Thursday. Ladner was sentenced to 28 years, Hyden to 14 years and Horton to 10 years.
