COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Gallego Helps UCI Beat San Diego, 9-6
Chris Gallego had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run to lead UC Irvine to a 9-6 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Irvine.
Craig Plumley and Gallego had RBI singles and Osmar DeChavez had an RBI double as Irvine scored five runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.
James Kocins (1-0) got the victory for Irvine (29-23), which added two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth.
In a Big West Conference softball doubleheader:
Cal State Long Beach 2-1, Cal State Fullerton 1-0 (both games 10 innings)--Kim Kostyk had an RBI single in the 10th inning of the first game and Sandra Ross had an RBI groundout as visiting Long Beach (41-16, 24-8) moved 3 1/2 games ahead of Fullerton (42-19, 20-11) in the race for second place in the Big West.
In the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 wild-card softball game:
Cal Baptist 3, Christ College Irvine 1--Cal Baptist scored an unearned run in the second and two unearned runs in the fifth to advance to the District 3 championships Friday against Cal Lutheran.
