WEEKEND BOX OFFICE : Ninja Turtles Riding a Wave

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” continues to dominate the box office. With weekend ticket sales of $9.7 million, New Line Cinema’s PG-rated turtle tale has now grossed $89 million. Touchstone Pictures’ R-rated romance, “Pretty Woman,” also continues its winning streak. Weekend ticket sales of $8.3 million bring its grosses to $71.7 million. Meanwhile, with receipts of $3.5 million--and grosses of $95 million--Paramount Pictures’ “The Hunt for Red October” is now cruising toward the prestigious $100-million mark.
Among new titles, only Orion Pictures’ “Miami Blues” placed in the Top Five. The black and blue (and blood-red) comedy-drama, about the exploits of a sometimes-likable sociopath (Alec Baldwin), earned about $3 million.
* MGM/UA’s just-out “Lisa,” about a terrorized teen-ager, grossed $1.1 million in limited release at 287 theaters, for a solid per-screen average of $3,902.
