Terry Shea, the offensive coordinator at the University of California for the past three seasons, was named the coach at San Jose State.
Shea, 43, was given a five-year contract. He replaces Claude Gilbert, who was reassigned within the school’s athletic department last month after failing to adhere to guidelines laid out by Athletic Director Randy Hoffman.
During Gilbert’s six years as San Jose State’s coach, the football program had a graduation rate of 14%. After being directed to recruit more high school student-athletes, Gilbert’s latest recruiting class consisted of 21 community college transfers.
San Jose State was 6-5 last season and 38-30-1 under Gilbert.
