U.S. Bishops’ PR Campaign Against Abortion
I think Novak misses the whole point of the opposition to Catholic bishops hiring a public relations firm to spread morality as they see it.
No reasonable person is denying the bishops’ right to preach their religious views. They have all the publicity venues that any other citizen of this country has for that purpose and they are welcome to use them. That is not the issue. The issue is their attempt to influence the government to pass laws that would impose their views on everyone else, regardless of the person’s beliefs.
As someone who was raised as a Catholic, I also believe that life begins at conception, therefore, abortion is out of the question for me. However, since this is not a scientifically proven fact, it falls within the realm of theology and personal beliefs. The last time I looked at the Constitution, American citizens enjoyed freedom of religion, or even freedom from religion. No one has a right to impose his or her beliefs on someone else. Therefore, the only thing to do is to let each woman choose what is best for her and her family according to her own conscience.
