EQUESTRIAN
The Volvo World Cup equestrian competition will be coming to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in 1992, marking the first time the event will be held in the western United States.
Because it is an Olympic year, the event should provide a preview of the Olympics, with most competitors going on to the Games in Barcelona. Del Mar gained the competition over bids from Tampa and Toronto.
Gloria (Brooks) Parry, chairwoman of the event, estimates that over 50,000 visitors will attend. A $5.4-million horse show arena is being constructed and will be completed by January 1991.
BASKETBALL
Jack Avina, who was basketball coach at the University of Portland for 17 years, was hired as a part-time assistant at the University of San Diego.
USD Coach Hank Egan says Avina will be involved exclusively in teaching situations with players.
“I’ve known Coach Avina almost 20 years,” Egan said. “I have a great deal of respect for his knowledge of the game and his ability to communicate with the young players.”
Avina was at Portland from 1970 to 1987, compiling a 222-243 record. In 1978, Portland finished 19-8, and Avina was honored as the conference coach of the year.
Over the past two years, Avina worked as coach of a professional team in Turkey.
BASEBALL
University of San Diego scored five runs in the eighth to defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 10-6, in a nonconference game at Pomona. USD (18-25) picked up its runs in the eighth on three doubles, three singles, a walk and an error.
Cal Poly dropped to 11-29.
