‘Swimming Hole’ on Sale: The Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth will sell Thomas Eakins’ painting, “The Swimming Hole,” at Sotheby’s New York on May 24. The 1883-84 painting, which is an icon of American art and a jewel of the museum’s collection, is expected to bring between $10 million and $15 million. Eakins’ painting of a group of nude male swimmers is being sold to establish an acquisitions fund for 20th-Century art. The museum bought the work for $700 in 1925.
