TENNIS ROUNDUP : Gilbert and Krickstein Keep Right On Winning
Brad Gilbert and Aaron Krickstein, fresh from leading the United States to a Davis Cup victory over Czechoslovakia, advanced to the second round of a $250,000 tournament Wednesday at Orlando, Fla.
The top-seeded Gilbert was unsatisfied with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over West German Christian Saceanu.
“I didn’t feel I was striking the ball as well as I should be,” Gilbert said. “I’m a perfectionist out there and I wear my emotions.
“But I take any victory the way it comes. I wish I could be Steffi Graf and win every match one and one. I could get used to that.”
The second-seeded Krickstein downed Markus Zoecke of West Germany, 6-1, 6-2, in 49 minutes.
“Any time you can win easily it’s good,” Krickstein said.
In other matches, Jason Stoltenberg of Australia upset fifth-seeded Glenn Layendecker, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, while third-seeded Christo van Rensburg of South Africa defeated Nicholas Pereira of Venezuela, 6-3, 7-6.
As far as results, one could hardly tell the difference between top-seeded Martina Navratilova and unseeded Jennifer Capriati in the second round of a $500,000 women’s clay-court tournament at Hilton Head, S.C.
Navratilova defeated 12th-seeded Isabel Cueto of West Germany, 6-3, 6-2, and the 14-year-old Capriati trounced Angeliki Kanellopoulou of Greece, 6-1, 6-3.
Capriati has a 10-2 record in three professional tournaments, but faces a big hurdle today against second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez of Spain, who beat Mary Lou Daniels, 6-2, 6-2.
In another match, fifth-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria routed Linda Harvey Wild, 6-1, 6-2.
