Sunset Hall’s Would-Be Buyer Sues Its Owners
The fate of Sunset Hall, a retirement home for aging radicals in the Mid-Wilshire District, may once again be in the hands of the courts. Joseph Cofre, a developer who had agreed to buy the facility for $1.2 million, has sued the nonprofit corporation that operates it, charging the group reneged on the deal.
Cofre’s suit contends that he has “incurred damages due to the delay in obtaining possession.”
Jerry Manpearl, an attorney for Sunset Hall, denied that the corporation had acted illegally and predicted that Cofre’s suit would not succeed. The proposed sale and closure of the home was put on hold earlier this month after a number of people committed to keeping Sunset Hall open joined its board of directors.
