CASTLEDERG, Northern Ireland — Residents cleaned up today after a one-ton Irish Republican Army bomb exploded behind a police station, wounding eight people and damaging more than 100 homes.
Explosives packed into four large metal drums in a hijacked van exploded without warning Sunday at the station in Castlederg’s town center, police said.
A spokesman for the Royal Ulster Constabulary said the police station and a nearby church were damaged. Many homes suffered minor damage, but some were so badly damaged they will have to be demolished, police said.
The IRA claimed responsibility in a statement distributed to news media in the British province, and said the bomb contained one ton of explosives.
