Ex-NAACP President Pleads Not Guilty to Fraud

A former president of the NAACP’s Los Angeles chapter pleaded not guilty Friday to a host of bank fraud charges, including allegations that he lied on a loan application at a savings and loan where he worked.
Anthony Essex, 32, head of the local National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People chapter from 1988 to 1989, entered not guilty pleas to 10 fraud charges, five of which were filed Thursday, Assistant U.S. Atty. Gregory Schetina said.
Four of the new charges allege that Essex, while a vice president at Founders Savings & Loan Assn., helped a friend prepare fraudulent documents in her application for a $50,000 loan.
