A Timely Warning on Quakes

Your special section Oct. 12 on “The Big One” was excellent. It was a valuable and timely contribution to the community.
Although many Orange County residents may not know it, they have valuable disaster-preparedness information in their homes today. It’s the Survival Guide printed in the front of the Pacific Bell Directory. The Survival Guide explains first-aid techniques and precautions that people would take after an earthquake.
Pacific Bell also urges people to avoid making telephone calls after an earthquake unless they need paramedics, police or the fire department. Our telephone network is reinforced to withstand a good shake, but it can be overloaded. We urge our customers to develop disaster plans, designating one person for every family member to contact after a major quake. It will help reduce telephone network gridlock.
