ART/LA89 has named Councilman Joel Wachs and British artists Gilbert and George as winners of this year’s International Art Award. Wachs was cited as “the city’s strongest advocate for the arts” and lauded for spearheading the new Los Angeles Endowment for the Arts. Gilbert and George, who synthesize photographs, text and self-portraits in visual documents of British life, were honored for their support of AIDS victims. They all will be honored at a gala Dec. 6, kicking off ART/LA89’s fourth international contemporary art fair that will take place Dec. 7-11 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
