Mother Accused of Pushing 2 Children Out Window; 1 Killed, 1 Critically Hurt
NEW YORK — A mother charged with pushing two of her children from a window of their 10th-floor apartment pleaded innocent Friday to murdering one child and attempting to murder the other.
A court-appointed lawyer for Ameenah Abdus-Salaam, 32, entered the plea during an arraignment at Queens Criminal Court Friday afternoon, said Dick Piperno, a spokesman for the Queens District Attorney.
Abdus-Salaam is charged with murder, attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
The judge ordered her remanded to a city hospital prison for psychiatric examination.
Her 6-year-old daughter, Zainab, was killed and her 3-year-old son, Husein, was critically injured in the incident. Officials said that Abdus-Salaam pushed the children from the window saying, “God is waiting for you.”
