Spain Defeats the Soviet Union in Federation Cup

TOKYO — Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Conchita Martinez, both 17, led Spain to a 2-1 victory over the Soviet Union Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Federation Cup, the women’s version of the Davis Cup.
Sanchez beat Natalie Zvereva, 7-5, 6-3, and then Martinez routed Larissa Savchencko, 6-1, 6-1.
Australia defeated Bulgaria’s Maleeva sisters, 2-1. Katerina Maleeva downed Elizabeth Smylie, 6-2, 6-1, but older sister Manuela lost to Anne Minter, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In the doubles match, the Maleeva sisters lost, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.
