Salvadoran rebels attacked government forces in scattered raids in nine provinces in the first major attacks since peace talks with the government earlier this month. Military officials said 13 soldiers and 26 guerrillas were killed in the attacks, which a rebel communique said were in response to government repression--specifically the arrests of dozens of unionists. An 11-day cease-fire declared unilaterally by the rebels ended Sunday. It was the rebels’ broadest offensive since May 10, when they attacked positions in 10 provinces.
