The World : Fire Hits North Sea Ferry
Fire broke out on a Danish car ferry carrying 660 people in the North Sea, killing two people and injuring 32, but the crew put out the blaze and the vessel steamed into port under its own power, Danish officials said. The 32 injured, 28 of them crew members, were hospitalized for respiratory problems after the Britain-bound ferry reached port. The two who died were Swedish passengers who were among the 540 passengers and 120 crew on board the 15,000-ton ferry, which was 90 miles off the Danish west coast when the blaze was discovered at 5 a.m. Rescue authorities said crew members put out the fire, and the vessel made it to the Danish port of Esbjerg. Afterward, some of the passengers boarded another ferry to complete their journey to Britain.
