An explosion and fire ripped through a 58-foot cabin cruiser on Harbor Island at 10:20 p.m. Sunday. The blast damaged two other nearby boats, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman said.
No passengers were on board as flames engulfed the privately owned vessel, Big Mike, which was docked at the Cortez Marina, spokesman Larry Stewart said.
Firefighters contained the fire in about 20 minutes. Damage to the boat was estimated at $1 million, Stewart said.
The boat arrived in port at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, and all passengers were off by 7:30 p.m., Stewart said.
The vessels Heather and Challenger II sustained damage of $35,000 and $20,000, respectively, Stewart said.
The explosion and fire aboard Big Mike apparently was caused by an electrical malfunction in the main cabin, Stewart said.
