Encyclopedia on Disk: Encyclopedia Britannica will unveil today a disk on which its entire 26-volume edition is stored with sight, sound and animated illustrations, and research indexes. Compton’s MultiMedia Encyclopedia has more than 600 megabytes of memory, equal to 1,800 floppy disks. It operates on IBM-AT and IBM PS/2 model 30 personal computers and compatibles. Besides the 9-million-word database, the disk holds Webster’s Intermediate Dictionary with 65,000 entries; 15,000 illustrations including charts, maps and diagrams--some color, some animated. The disk will be available Oct. 1 in a version for libraries and schools; a stand-alone version for home use debuts Jan. 1 for about $895.
